Ask the Next President What would you do to increase parental involvement?

Leave No Parent Behindtm

Is there truly going to be 'No child left behind'? Many of America's children have already been left behind, at home alone, to raise themselves on a thin and cruel diet of junk food, gangster rap, and trash television. How can they come to school ready to learn? Our nation's parents have been hit with a double whammy. Just as society calls for parents to spend more time with their children, the decline in living standards has forced greater time participation in the work force by America's 50 million public school parents, grandparents and caring adults, to make ends meet. Everyone agrees that parents have to become more involved in promoting change within their local school system.

A recent report calls on federal, state, and local officials to do a better job of abiding by the parental involvement sections of the No Child Left Behind Act. "It Takes A Parent" (Appleseed 2006) is based on research involving 18 school districts in six states. The report finds that: teachers and administrators often lack training in how to engage parents; and parent involvement has fallen to the bottom of the list of NCLB requirements, though it is integral to the success of the law and of students and schools. Current parent involvement provisions of the law are solid and ambitious, but require more faithful implementation and greater enforcement. "Without better informed and involved parents, all of the testing and data is just a lot of paper -- the proverbial tree in the forest that no one hears," said Linda Singer, Appleseed Executive Director.

Genuine education reform in this country cannot take place without involved parents. If we fail to make systematic efforts to engage more parents to become involved in public schools, we are clearly fighting an uphill battle with some very unpleasant long-term consequences for this nation. Project Appleseed needs your help, right now, to improve our schools. We are organizing America's parents to stand-up for public schools. I am asking you to back this campaign by asking candidates for president, "If you are elected President of the United States, what would you do to increase parental involvement?"

Take a few minutes and watch the candidate video's on this page and post a question or comment for the candidates(s) of your choice. Project Appleseed wants to focus America's attention on improving parental involvement. Project Appleseed builds consciousness and support to renew local public schools. We are mobilizing five million parents to volunteer 10 hours each in individual schools by taking our learning compact --the Parental Involvement Pledge.

As a leader in the parental involvement movement in America, I invite you to join our campaign by making a tax deductible gift through an online donation. You have made public education a priority in your life, now let's spread the seeds of school improvement all over your community and across America. Don't stand on the sidelines for this election -- we need everyone's help.

Very truly yours,

Kevin Walker
